In an unexpected turn of events, DJ Burns, the N.C. State big man who gained fame during the NCAA tournament, has joined the Cleveland Cavaliers' Summer League team. Despite going unselected in the 2024 NBA Draft, Burns is determined to prove himself and secure a spot in the league.

Known for his impressive touch and footwork, Burns became a viral sensation during the Wolfpack's remarkable run to the Final Four, where they were ultimately defeated by Purdue. His inclusion in the Summer League has garnered the attention and support of many fans eager to see him succeed in his NBA journey.

One reason for Burns' popularity was his substantial frame, listed at a conservative 6-foot-9, 275 pounds. However, he made a decisive change in preparation for the draft, shedding an impressive 45 pounds in just two months. Burns expressed his dedication and discipline throughout this transformative process, acknowledging the intense effort required to reach his goals.

Reflecting on his weight loss journey, Burns remarked, "It's been the most interesting experience of my entire life. I don't think I've ever had to work this hard and be this disciplined." He added, "Everything that I've learned is something that I can take with me to the league or wherever I end up playing basketball, specifically preparing for the draft. I'm just ready."

During his time at N.C. State, Burns showcased his skills, averaging 12.7 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game while shooting an impressive 54.4% from the field. Having transferred from Winthrop after three seasons, he has proven his adaptability and determination to succeed at the collegiate level.

Despite his accomplishments, Burns faces certain challenges as he strives to establish himself in the NBA. At his current size, he may be considered undersized as a center, and his susceptibility to faster wings as a power forward could pose difficulties. Additionally, his limited attempts at three-pointers in college may require further improvement to earn meaningful minutes on the court.

Nevertheless, as Burns takes part in the Summer League, he has the opportunity to continue showcasing his skills and providing fans with the same excitement they witnessed during March Madness. With his determination and newfound discipline, the former NCAA tournament hero aims to prove that he belongs in the NBA.
