The Long Beach Fire Department responded to a report of a person in full cardiac arrest in the park's parking lot. Despite their best efforts, the responders were unable to revive Burroughs, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, as confirmed by public information officer Brian Fisk.

Burroughs, who grew up in Long Beach, had a remarkable journey in the world of baseball. He was a prominent player in the Little League World Series, representing the Long Beach team that achieved back-to-back victories in 1992 and 1993.
