Former Michigan Football Star Stops Attack on 80-Year-Old Man at Michigan YMCA

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. - Malik Ali Smith, a 20-year-old from Farmington Hills, has been charged in a disturbing assault that took place in the locker room of the Farmington Family YMCA in Oakland County, Michigan. The attack was promptly halted by Braylon Edwards, a former University of Michigan football star, who happened to be present at the YMCA at the time.

According to prosecutors, Smith and the 80-year-old victim engaged in a verbal altercation that quickly escalated into a physical confrontation. Edwards, who was in the vicinity, heard the commotion and intervened to put an end to the violence.

Recalling the incident, Edwards explained, "I overheard an argument about music being played too loudly. Initially, I didn't pay much attention to it, but as the tension grew and I heard physical contact, I stepped in to assess the situation. I witnessed Smith attempting to slam the 80-year-old man's head onto a nearby counter, so I immediately intervened."

Braylon Edwards' swift action undoubtedly saved the elderly man from further harm. "This was a vicious and senseless attack," stated McDonald, a prosecutor involved in the case. "We commend Edwards for his bravery and will ensure that justice is served for the victim."

Following the incident, Smith managed to flee the YMCA, but he was apprehended shortly thereafter. He appeared in court on Saturday, facing charges of assault with intent to murder, which carries a potential life sentence. Meanwhile, the 80-year-old victim remains in critical condition and is receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.

Edwards expressed surprise about the severity of the incident, stating, "I wasn't fully aware of the gravity of the situation at first. However, after speaking to the detective who informed me that my timely intervention likely prevented more serious harm, I realized the importance of stepping in to help others."

Smith was remanded to the Oakland County Jail after his arraignment, with a bond set at $250,000 cash/surety. The investigation into the assault continues, as authorities strive to gather all evidence in order to proceed with the case.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of individuals like Braylon Edwards, who are willing to intervene and protect others from harm. Edwards' brave actions demonstrate the true spirit of community and the responsibility we all have to ensure the safety of those around us.
