The U.S. Soccer Federation has reportedly approached former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp as a top target for the men's national team job, following the recent firing of Gregg Berhalter. According to a report from The Independent, the USSF made initial approaches through intermediaries to gauge Klopp's interest in leading the team.
However, The Athletic has since reported that Klopp has turned down the approach and expressed his desire for a coaching break. Despite this, the U.S. remains interested in potentially adding Klopp to their coaching staff if he were to change his mind in the future.
Interestingly, U.S. women's national team coach Emma Hayes has a longstanding relationship with Klopp, dating back to her tenure at Chelsea F.C. Women. The two managers frequently communicate through text messages, and Hayes has sought advice from Klopp in the past.
Klopp, who left Liverpool in May citing burnout as the reason, has been a highly sought-after coaching figure. Some speculated that he may be enticed by the less demanding nature of a national team job, which involves a reduced number of international matches and day-to-day responsibilities compared to club management.
Adding to the existing connections between Klopp and the USMNT, the German manager previously invited American star Christian Pulisic to train with Borussia Dortmund's senior team during his final season with the club. Additionally, Klopp wished American soccer fans a happy Independence Day on social media shortly after the USMNT's elimination from the Copa América.
With the search for a new coach well underway, U.S. Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker has emphasized their aim to secure a "serial winner" to lead the men's national team. Klopp certainly fits the bill, with his impressive track record that includes two Bundesliga titles with Dortmund and winning the Premier League, Champions League, and FIFA Club World Cup with Liverpool.
However, when reached for comment, a spokesperson for U.S. Soccer declined to confirm the organization's interest in Klopp as reported by The Independent.
As the search for a new leader continues, soccer enthusiasts and fans of the USMNT eagerly await further updates on who will take charge of the team and guide them in their future endeavors.
