In anticipation of the upcoming docuseries "Thank You Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story," fans are eager to know more about the relationship between former Bon Jovi bandmates Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora. However, it appears that communication between the two rockers remains at a standstill.
Bon Jovi, the band's frontman, made it clear that despite both being involved in the Hulu production, he and Sambora are not in contact. Speaking about the documentary, Bon Jovi explained, "This is not us behind the scenes pulling strings. Oh, no, no, no. They interviewed Richie in London. I wasn't there. I had nothing to do with it. I still haven't seen the [finished] product."
The rift between the two musicians dates back to April 2013 when Sambora unexpectedly left the band just hours before a show in Calgary. Canadian musician Phil X stepped in to fill Sambora's shoes, as he had done previously when Sambora went to rehab in 2011, and continued to perform with Bon Jovi for the remainder of their tour.
Bon Jovi reflected on their fractured relationship, stating, "We're not in contact because he's not in the organization any longer. Doesn't mean that there's not love forever, but it's 11 years ago that he just didn't show up anymore." He attributed Sambora's departure to emotional and substance abuse issues, mentioning the challenges he faced as a single parent.
Sambora himself opened up about his decision to leave the band in 2020, expressing that it wasn't a popular choice but one that he felt compelled to make for personal reasons. He explained, "I had a lot of conscious work to do around [my personal life]. We've been through a lot of things together. That was a time of psychological maintenance for the family."
Reflecting on their extensive touring history, Sambora highlighted the demanding nature of their careers, saying, "When I look back and start to list the tours... 18-and-a-half months of being on the road, 52 countries... It's like, wow. It was really time for a break. We did that 14 times over a 31-year period."
As fans eagerly await the release of "Thank You Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story," it remains to be seen how the documentary will shed light on the complex dynamics between Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora. While their relationship is currently strained, their shared history and mutual respect suggest that there may still be hope for a reconciliation in the future.
