Philadelphia, PA - The Philadelphia Flyers prospects displayed their impressive skills and potential during the team's annual development camp in Voorhees, New Jersey. With training camp set to open on September 18th, some of these prospects are eager to fight for a coveted NHL roster spot.
Over the course of the camp, a group of 37 prospects and development camp invitees showcased their abilities before culminating in a scrimmage finale. While some players took full advantage of the opportunity to improve their stock, others struggled to make an impact.
One player who stood out during the camp was London defenseman Oliver Bonk. Despite a quiet performance in the scrimmage, Bonk's consistent improvement and strong hockey IQ have caught the attention of the Flyers' coaching staff. The 19-year-old defenseman has set his sights on making the NHL roster this season and seems destined to fulfill that dream, potentially at the expense of Rasmus Ristolainen, who may be traded due to his hefty contract.
Two other prospects, Denver Barkey and Alex Bump, also impressed with their offensive skills and puck control. Barkey's size did not hinder his performance, and if he continues to strengthen his leg power and explosiveness, he should have no trouble transitioning to the next level. Bump, currently playing for the University of Western Michigan, has shown promise both in camp and during his college career, leading Assistant General Manager Brent Flahr to predict an NHL future for him.
As the Flyers assess their future needs, the left-shot left wings on their roster, including Joel Farabee, Noah Cates, and Nick Deslauriers, have become a focal point. Cates is a restricted free agent at the end of the season, while Farabee's four-year contract at a $5 million cap hit raises questions about his value as a middle-six forward. Denver Barkey and Alex Bump's impressive development camp performances might prompt the Flyers to consider shaking up their roster to make room for these promising left wings.
Beyond the prospects' individual performances, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, the Flyers' AHL affiliate, also showcased their potential for the upcoming season. Despite a subpar performance last year, the Phantoms have reason for optimism with the improved form of players like J.R. Avon and Hunter McDonald. Massimo Rizzo's return from injury further bolsters the team's prospects, while defenseman Ethan Samson aims to secure a permanent spot in Lehigh Valley. Meanwhile, goaltenders Matteo Drobac and Arthur Smith demonstrated their capabilities as reliable shot-stoppers for Team Jones, proving they can hold their own at the AHL level.
One player who will need to make a strong impression in the upcoming season is Carter Sotheran, the Flyers' fifth-round pick in 2023. With Bonk and Samson excelling at camp, Sotheran faces tough competition for an NHL path. Another obstacle is the allocation of a high draft pick to Spencer Gill, tightening the competition for right defense. Even Austin Moline, a seventh-round pick from 2024, has an opportunity to make his mark. Sotheran will need an impressive D+2 campaign to reclaim his position on the Flyers' radar.
With the development camp concluded, the Flyers will continue evaluating their prospects to determine the best course of action ahead of training camp. The competition for NHL roster spots promises to be intense, ensuring the Flyers' future success as they select the most deserving prospects to join their ranks.
