In a surprising move, the Philadelphia Flyers announced on Friday that they have decided to part ways with right winger Cam Atkinson. General manager Danny Briere acknowledged that it was a tough decision to make, given Atkinson's accomplishments and character.

During his time with the Flyers, Atkinson showcased an exceptional work ethic and professionalism, earning him the Bobby Clarke Trophy as team MVP in his first season. However, his tenure with the team took a hit when he missed the entire 2022-23 season due to a neck injury that required surgery.

Unfortunately, Atkinson's production and playing time declined in what ultimately became his final season with the Flyers. He recorded 28 points, including 13 goals and 15 assists, in 70 games while carrying a minus-22 rating. Despite his impressive track record of 770 career NHL games and a 41-goal season, Atkinson faced healthy scratches and saw his playing time reduced to just 10:50 minutes per game in his last 13 outings.

The decision to let go of Atkinson may have been influenced by the Flyers' burgeoning youth at the right wing position. With top prospect Matvei Michkov on the horizon, along with promising players such as Owen Tippett, Tyson Foerster, Bobby Brink, and Samu Tuomaala, all aged 25 and under, the Flyers have a wealth of talented options vying for playing time.

General manager Danny Briere expressed his gratitude towards Atkinson for his contributions to the team and his role in raising the standard of play. Acknowledging that Atkinson will always have a place in the Flyers organization, Briere wished him and his family success in their future endeavors.

As the Flyers continue to prepare for the upcoming 2024 NHL draft, questions arise about potential trade candidates and the number of picks they will acquire. With the departure of Atkinson, the team is sure to undergo some reevaluation as they strive to build a competitive roster for the future.
