In a surprising turn of events, the Florida State Seminoles have stumbled out of the gate in the 2024-2025 season, leaving head coach Mike Norvell to shoulder the blame. After suffering a 28-13 defeat at the hands of the Boston College Eagles, Norvell expressed his disappointment and took full responsibility for the team's lackluster performance.
A solemn Norvell addressed reporters, admitting his dissatisfaction with the way the season had unfolded thus far. "I'm just sick to how the season's started," he confessed, highlighting his inability to adequately prepare the team for their recent outing. Norvell, who has been at the helm for five seasons, acknowledged the team's shortcomings in their loss to Boston College but ultimately accepted the blame himself.
"In all phases, we were not able to execute. I obviously didn't put them in a position to showcase what I believe this football team is, and it's extremely disappointing," Norvell conceded. He further apologized to fans and everyone associated with the program, expressing his disappointment in their performance.
The defeat against Boston College marks the Seminoles' second consecutive loss, placing them at an unexpected 0-2 record. This is the first time since 2021 that Florida State finds itself in this position. Previously, the defending Atlantic Coast Conference champions suffered a Week 0 loss in Dublin, Ireland, against ACC rivals Georgia Tech.
Norvell's accountability didn't waver as he discussed the defeat in Ireland, expressing his dissatisfaction with their performance. "It's sickening that we came up short in that game," he lamented. "Obviously, I take total responsibility and ownership for that. It's my job to have the team prepared to go and play to the best of our ability. I don't believe that was our best."
Looking ahead, Florida State aims to bounce back as they prepare to host the Memphis Tigers, who currently hold an impressive 2-0 record. With redemption on their minds, the Seminoles hope to regain their winning form and prove that they are capable of living up to their initial expectations for the season.
Despite the setback, Coach Norvell remains determined to turn things around, acknowledging his responsibility in preparing the team to perform at their full potential. Florida State fans eagerly await their team's response as they look to overcome this early-season adversity and get back on track.
