Florida Governor Signs Bill to Expedite Eviction Process for Squatters

In a move aimed at addressing the growing concern of squatters in the state, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed a new bill that will allow immediate eviction of unauthorized occupants. The bill, HB 621, was signed by DeSantis during a news conference in Orlando, signaling the state's determination to put an end to the "squatter scam."

Previously, squatters were considered tenants and required a lengthy eviction process. However, the new legislation strips squatters of their rights and empowers property owners to swiftly regain control of their dwellings. Under the updated law, victims of squatting can simply fill out a form and submit it to their local sheriff, who will then be authorized to remove the unauthorized occupants.

Lawmakers overwhelmingly supported the bill, which not only expedites the eviction process but also introduces strict penalties for those attempting to deceive property owners with false documents. Anyone found presenting fraudulent lease agreements, deeds, or other property conveyance instruments will face criminal charges.

Furthermore, the bill includes provisions that make it illegal to list or advertise for sale, rent, or lease residential real property if the occupant does not possess an authorized lease from the property owner. Additionally, causing $1,000 or more in damages to the property will be classified as a felony offense.

The new legislation will come into effect on July 1, providing relief to property owners who have been grappling with the challenge of dealing with squatters.

Governor DeSantis expressed his optimism about the impact of the bill, stating that "the state of Florida will be better for it." The swift action taken by Florida lawmakers demonstrates their commitment to tackling the issue of squatting and protecting the rights of property owners across the state.
