LAS VEGAS, N.M. - The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flash flood emergency for Las Vegas, New Mexico, and Romeroville until 12 a.m. on Saturday. The NWS reports that an estimated one to four inches of rainfall has already been recorded in the area on Friday, including the southern part of the Hermits Peak Calf Canyon burn scar.

Due to the severity of the situation, the City of Las Vegas has taken proactive measures by opening two shelters for the community. Residents are urged to evacuate certain parts of the city to ensure their safety.

In addition, NM Roads has issued an alert for motorists traveling on I-25 north and southbound at Mile Marker 342, as well as NM 250, which are both experiencing standing water on the road. Motorists are advised to exercise caution and consider alternative routes if possible.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation has also announced the closure of NM 65 at milepost 5 (Montezuma) due to flash flooding. Specifically, NM Highway 65 is closed from Mile Marker 4 and extends south along Hot Spring Blvd. This closure aims to prevent any potential accidents or hazards caused by the dangerous road conditions.

With the flash flood emergency in effect, residents are encouraged to stay updated through official weather alerts and local news sources. It is crucial to prioritize personal safety by heeding evacuation orders and avoiding areas prone to flooding.

Authorities will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as necessary. The safety and well-being of the community remain the utmost priority during this challenging weather event.
