In an incredible breakthrough, a five-year-old boy from Long Island, New York, has become the youngest person in the world to receive a bionic hero arm. Jordan, who was born without a left hand, now has an Iron Man-style prosthetic that has brought a new level of confidence into his life.
The custom-made hero arm, produced by Bristol-based company Open Bionics, is made using cutting-edge 3D printing technology. Jordan's mother, Ashley Marotta, shared that the prosthetic has had an instant impact on her son, making him feel like a superhero and boosting his self-assurance.
Open Bionics, known for its innovative work in the field, has fitted amputees with hero arms in countries such as Ukraine, Germany, and Australia. Co-founder Samantha Payne expressed their delight for Jordan, adding that they are excited to witness how he puts his new Iron Man arm to work.
The journey to obtaining the hero arm for Jordan began when his mother started following Open Bionics on social media. When the company opened a clinic in New York, she reached out to them, despite initially being told that Jordan was too young. However, Open Bionics decided to see the young boy and were pleasantly surprised by how quickly he adapted to the technology.
Jordan wasted no time in showing off his new superhero arm to his teachers and friends at school. His mother shared his excitement and how it has granted him newfound abilities, such as grasping scooter handles and confidently manipulating objects. The hero arm uses special sensors that detect muscular contractions, translating them into bionic hand movements.
While most children who receive hero arms are typically aged seven or older, Jordan's young age and high IQ made it easier for him to learn how to use the prosthesis. Open Bionics, highlighting their unique capabilities, stated that they are the only company in the world producing lightweight and customizable bionic hands suitable for children as young as Jordan.
The collaboration between Open Bionics and The Walt Disney Company allows children like Jordan to enjoy hero arms inspired by popular characters from the Marvel, Star Wars, and Disney universes. This partnership brings a touch of imagination and joy to the lives of young amputees.
Jordan's life has been transformed by the bionic hero arm, providing him with newfound freedom, independence, and an immeasurable sense of pride. As more advancements are made in the field of prosthetics, children like Jordan can look forward to even more opportunities to embrace their inner superheroes.
