The New Mexico Department of Health has confirmed the first case of hantavirus in the state this year. A man in San Juan County was hospitalized after contracting the virus but has since been released and is currently recovering at home. The health department emphasizes that deer mice, often found in mice droppings and urine, are the primary carriers of hantavirus. Symptoms typically appear within one to six weeks following exposure.
