According to reports, Ferrari is reportedly making efforts to secure the services of renowned Formula 1 technical chief, Adrian Newey, once he becomes available in early 2025. Newey, who has been with Red Bull for almost two decades, is set to leave the team in the first quarter of 2025, marking a significant development in the sport.
It has been revealed that Newey's contract, which was recently renegotiated last year, initially ran until the end of 2025 and included a 12-month non-compete clause. If enforced, this clause would have prevented Newey from joining another team until the start of 2027, which would have left him joining a new team midway through a fresh set of technical regulations that he has been known to exploit effectively.
However, with the help of his close friend and manager Eddie Jordan, Newey has managed to secure an early departure from Red Bull that would allow him to start with a different team in the first few months of 2025. Although multiple teams are likely to covet his expertise, Ferrari is believed to be the most attractive option for Newey, given his desire for new challenges after his tenure at Red Bull.
While no official agreement has been reached, it has been reported that Newey recently met with Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur in London, right before the Miami Grand Prix. Ferrari has neither denied nor confirmed this meeting, but sources suggest that Vasseur is actively pushing for Newey's arrival.
If Newey were to join Ferrari at the earliest opportunity, the team would already be well underway with the development of their 2026 car. However, there would still be ample time for Newey to use his expertise and insights to influence the final design. Newey's ability to think laterally and his knack for redefining performance factors has often set the teams he has worked with on a different path, leading to tremendous success.
Ferrari, under the leadership of team boss Fred Vasseur, has been making significant strides since his appointment ahead of the 2023 season. The team has already attracted top talent such as seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes' performance director, Loic Serra. Acquiring Newey's services would be seen as a massive technical coup and a testament to Ferrari's resurgence.
Both Hamilton and Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc have expressed their enthusiasm about the potential addition of Newey to the team. Hamilton stated that Newey would be at the top of his list of people he'd like to work with, while Leclerc described Newey as someone he had hoped to work with throughout his career.
Ferrari, having made significant progress over the last year, sees itself in a favorable position to attract top talents in the industry. The addition of someone like Adrian Newey would undoubtedly strengthen the already formidable team and further their pursuit of glory in Formula 1.
While the negotiations are ongoing, the Formula 1 community eagerly awaits the outcome of Ferrari's pursuit of Adrian Newey, a technical mastermind who has left an indelible mark on the sport.
