Federal agents have boarded a vessel managed by the same company as a cargo ship that was at the center of the tragic Baltimore bridge collapse. The FBI, along with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Criminal Investigation Division and Coast Guard Investigative Services, are conducting court-authorized law enforcement activity aboard the Maersk Saltoro, managed by Synergy Marine Group. This development comes following allegations made by the U.S. Justice Department claiming that the owner, Grace Ocean Private Ltd., and manager, Synergy Marine Group, were negligent and disregarded electrical issues on the ship, leading to the fatal incident on the Francis Scott Key Bridge earlier this year.
In the lawsuit, the U.S. Justice Department accuses the Singapore-based owner and manager of the cargo ship of cutting corners and ignoring known electrical problems on the vessel, which experienced a power outage moments before colliding with a support column on the bridge. Tragically, the collision resulted in the loss of six lives of workers on the bridge. As part of the lawsuit, the Justice Department is seeking to recover over $100 million that was spent by the government to clear the debris underwater and reopen Baltimore's port to maritime traffic.
Darrell Wilson, a spokesperson for Grace Ocean, confirmed reports that federal agents, including the FBI and Coast Guard, boarded the Maersk Saltoro at the Port of Baltimore on Saturday morning. Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, Wilson expressed the company's anticipation for their day in court to refute the claims made by the Justice Department regarding the incident. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the bridge collapse and the actions of the companies involved continues as authorities delve deeper into the events leading up to the tragic accident.
