FC Barcelona has announced the successful transfer of player Mikayil Faye to Stade Rennais FC in a deal worth €10.3 million. The Catalan club, in a statement shared on their official website and social media platforms, revealed that they also have a right of repurchase for €25 million and will receive 30% of any future sale of the player.
The statement expressed gratitude to Faye for his commitment and dedication, while also wishing him luck and success in his future endeavors both personally and professionally. Faye's transfer marks another significant move in Barcelona's ongoing squad restructuring.
Last summer, FC Barcelona secured Faye's signature, beating out fierce competition from European rivals, including Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea. The Senegalese player was acquired for a few million dollars from Croatian second division side NK Kustosija. During his time with Barca Atletic, Faye had the opportunity to learn from the legendary Rafa Marquez, one of the century's greatest center backs.
Faye's strong performances with the reserves during the 2023/2024 campaign had put him in contention for a first-team spot under manager Hansi Flick. However, with an abundance of central defenders in the squad, including Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez as primary choices, Faye's chances were limited. In addition, the injury to Ronald Araujo further complicated his path to the first team.
While Flick had considered deploying Faye as a left back, the youngster failed to convince, and the need for Barcelona to generate sales resulted in him being made available for transfer. Various reports, including those from Sky Italia, had linked Faye with a potential move to Inter Milan. However, the Italian side's offer of €15 million, with deferred payments until June 30, 2025, did not meet Barcelona's demands.
Rennes emerged as strong contenders to sign Faye after the player failed to report for training ahead of an away trip to Valencia. Following Barcelona's 2-1 home victory over Athletic Club, the transfer to the French club was officially confirmed.
With the departures of Faye and Ilkay Gundogan this week, and potential exits for Clement Lenglet and Vitor Roque, Barcelona hopes that they can finally register their new signing, Dani Olmo, before their next La Liga fixture against Real Valladolid.
The transfer of Mikayil Faye signifies the continuation of FC Barcelona's restructuring efforts, as they aim to strengthen their squad and achieve success in the upcoming season.
