In a shocking turn of events, James Crumbley, the father of the teenager responsible for a deadly shooting at Oxford High School in Michigan, has allegedly threatened Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald during a jailhouse call, according to sources close to the matter.
The alleged threats came to light during Crumbley's manslaughter trial when the prosecutors requested restrictions on his communications. The Oakland County Sheriff's Office confirmed that Crumbley had made threatening statements via phone and electronic messages while in custody prior to the trial.
During the trial, defense attorney Mariell Lehman objected to the prosecutors bringing up these allegations in open court, eventually reaching an agreement that Crumbley's jailhouse communications would be limited until a verdict was reached.
Lehman offered limited details, only stating there was a disagreement regarding the nature of Crumbley's conversations but did not elaborate further.
The conviction of James Crumbley comes after he was found guilty on four counts of involuntary manslaughter last week for his involvement in his son's tragic shooting spree that took place on November 30, 2021. His wife, Jennifer Crumbley, had previously been convicted of the same charges.
The couple now faces a maximum sentence of up to 15 years in prison and are scheduled for sentencing next month. They are the first parents to be convicted of manslaughter in relation to their child's involvement in a school shooting.
During the trials, prosecutors presented evidence from survivors, police investigators, and school employees to establish the parents' "gross negligence" in allowing their son, Ethan, access to firearms and disregarding signs of his deteriorating mental health.
Particularly incriminating was the revelation that James Crumbley had purchased a 9mm gun for Ethan just days prior to the attack and failed to secure it properly.
While James Crumbley did not testify, his defense argued that there was insufficient evidence to prove he knew about his son's dangerous intentions, dismissing the prosecution's case as based on assumptions and hindsight.
Jennifer Crumbley, on the other hand, placed blame on the school, her husband, and her son during her defense, displaying no remorse for her actions.
Ethan, their teenage son and the perpetrator of the mass shooting, had already been sentenced to life in prison without parole after pleading guilty to charges including terrorism causing death and multiple counts of murder.
As the Crumbleys await their sentencing, the shocking case continues to shed light on the responsibilities of parents in preventing similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
CNN has reached out to both James Crumbley's defense attorney and the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office for comment on the alleged threats made by Crumbley.
