A jury has reached a verdict in the case of Adam Montgomery, who has been found guilty of the murder of his 5-year-old daughter, Harmony. Along with the murder charge, Adam Montgomery, 34, has also been convicted of second-degree assault, falsifying physical evidence, abuse of a corpse, and tampering with a witness and informants.
The decision was made after about a day of deliberation by the jury. Sentencing is expected to be scheduled sometime after April 1, possibly as late as May. Prosecutors plan to request Adam Montgomery's presence during the sentencing, as he was absent from court when the verdict was read and had not attended the trial since jury selection.
Harmony's mother, Crystal Sorey, stood in the courtroom with Harmony's foster mother as the verdict was delivered, surrounded by a packed room of reporters and law enforcement. About 25% of the Manchester police force was involved in the investigation of Harmony's disappearance and murder, which began in 2021 when she was reported missing.
The case transitioned to a homicide investigation in August 2022, leading to Adam Montgomery's arrest and subsequent charge of second-degree murder in October 2022. Senior Assistant Attorney General Ben Agati highlighted in a news conference after the verdict that the investigation is ongoing as Harmony's remains have not been located, stressing that Adam Montgomery was found guilty of disposing of her remains to conceal the crime.
Manchester Police Chief Allen Aldenberg commended his officers and prosecutors for their dedication to the case, emphasizing that the search for Harmony is not over. Agati praised the Manchester police officers as "lions" for their relentless pursuit of justice in this case.
Adam Montgomery faces a potential sentence of 35 years to life in prison for the second-degree murder charge. The additional felony charges carry sentences of 3½ to seven years, while the misdemeanor charge of abuse of a corpse holds a maximum sentence of 12 months. Closing arguments were heard on Wednesday after the defense opted not to call any witnesses during the trial.
