**Train Operator Killed, 20 Injured in New Jersey Rail Crash**
In a tragic accident early Monday morning, a train operator lost his life and at least 20 passengers were injured when a New Jersey River Line Light Rail train collided with a tree on the tracks. The incident occurred at approximately 6 a.m. in Mansfield Township, near US 130.
Initial reports suggested that six passengers were injured when the tree fell on the moving train. However, later updates indicated that nearly half of the 45 passengers onboard, about 20 individuals, sustained minor injuries due to the crash. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy confirmed the fatality and stated that the train collided with a tree lying across the tracks. "An investigation is underway. Our prayers are with all affected by this tragic incident," Governor Murphy announced on social media platform X.
The collision site revealed a large piece of the tree wedged under the front of the train, as shown in footage from Chopper 6. Emergency crews were promptly on site to assist the injured passengers. As a result of the accident, New Jersey Transit River Line service has been suspended in both directions between Roebling and Bordentown.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident to determine the cause and any further safety measures needed to prevent such occurrences in the future.
