**Lightning Strike Tragedy in Peru: Soccer Player Killed During Local Match**
In a shocking incident during a regional soccer match in Huancayo, Peru, a lightning strike claimed the life of a player and led to the hospitalization of four others. The tragic event shines a harsh spotlight on the dangers posed by severe weather conditions during outdoor activities.
The incident occurred during a game between two local teams, C.D. Juventud Bellavista and U.D. Familia Chocca. José Hugo De la Cruz Meza, a player on the field, was fatally struck by lightning while attempting to leave the pitch as the weather deteriorated. The startling moment was captured on video, displaying a blinding flash followed by several players collapsing to the ground.
Mr. De la Cruz Meza was quickly transported to a hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival. Four other players were also hospitalized but have since been discharged, according to local reports.
Juan Chocca, one of the injured and the brother-in-law of Mr. De la Cruz Meza, recounted the terrifying experience to the newspaper La República: "I was just walking out with Hugo hugging each other. I took three steps after letting go of him, and the lightning struck us."
This tragic accident serves as a sobering reminder of the unpredictable and often deadly nature of lightning, particularly during storms when safety measures must be strictly adhered to.
