In a concerning incident at Dodger Stadium, a fan was struck by a falling piece of concrete during the Los Angeles Dodgers' game against the New York Yankees. The accident, which occurred on Friday, prompted the installation of protective netting in the upper deck by Saturday.
The netting covers a small, two-foot section on the top deck, aiming to prevent future incidents. The concrete, which displayed cracks and a craggy surface, fell in Section 10 reserve, situated between home plate and first base.
The injured fan, Ricardo Aquino from Mexico City, recounted through an interpreter that he was hit in the back during the third inning of the Dodgers' 8-5 victory. Aquino described experiencing pain but noted that the injury did not result in bleeding. Eyewitnesses corroborated his account, confirming that they saw the concrete strike him.
Security and a police officer quickly responded, with the officer taking the piece of concrete as evidence. Medical personnel attended to Aquino, who later resumed watching the game with an ice pack.
Fans seated nearby expressed their concerns, with Lewis Loy of Wilmington, Calif., emphasizing the potential danger. "Me personally, to see some rocks fall like that, I would be clearing out this whole area. How do you know it's not going to fall anymore?... It could have hit a kid," Loy remarked.
This incident brings to mind past occurrences at major stadiums, such as the April 1998 event at Yankee Stadium where a concrete beam fell, leading to game cancellations, and the July 2004 case at Wrigley Field where falling concrete narrowly missed a family.
The Dodgers have yet to issue a detailed response, but assured that they are gathering information regarding the incident.
