An explosion near a ship in the Red Sea on Monday is believed to be an attack carried out by Yemen's Houthi rebels, according to authorities. Fortunately, the blast caused no damage to the vessel, and there were no reported injuries.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center, operated by the British military, received a report from the master of the ship regarding the explosion. While details remained scarce, private security firm Ambrey suggested that the incident may have involved a missile. At this time, the Houthis have not claimed responsibility for the attack, which is typical as they usually take several hours to acknowledge their strikes.
This incident comes shortly after a Houthi missile struck a commercial ship in the Gulf of Aden last week, tragically claiming the lives of three crew members and forcing survivors to abandon the vessel. The attack marked the first fatal strike in a series of assaults by the Iranian-backed group, allegedly in response to Israel's war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The Houthis claim that these attacks are intended to pressure Israel into stopping the ongoing conflict, despite their targets showing little or no connection to the situation.
In recent months, the Houthi rebels have been involved in other provocative actions. Last month, they launched an attack on a cargo ship carrying fertilizer, the Rubymar, which eventually sank after drifting for several days. In addition, they have also been responsible for the downing of an American drone valued at tens of millions of dollars.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation in the Red Sea region. International efforts are underway to prevent further escalations and ensure the safety of commercial ships navigating in the area. As tensions continue to rise, it remains to be seen how this latest incident will impact the ongoing conflict and regional stability in the Red Sea.
It is worth noting that these events highlight the need for increased diplomatic efforts to address the underlying issues in the region and find sustainable solutions to prevent further violence and instability.
