**Aurora Borealis May Dazzle Northern U.S. States Sunday Night**

Residents in the northernmost states of the contiguous U.S. could catch a spectacular display of the northern lights this Sunday night, according to a forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This dazzling phenomenon is typically most active between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.

To maximize the chances of witnessing this natural light show, experts recommend viewing as close to the poles as possible and away from light pollution. Finding a vantage point, such as a hilltop, and monitoring weather conditions are also advised for optimal viewing.

For those hoping to capture the event on camera, using night mode and longer exposure times on smartphones can enhance photo quality. Increasing the camera’s exposure is another helpful trick for capturing the vibrant colors of the northern lights.

The celestial event follows a weekend of extraordinary night sky occurrences. The last "supermoon" of the year was visible on Friday night, while the Leonid meteor shower reached its peak from Saturday night into early Sunday. The meteor shower will continue until December 2.

The recent increase in visibility of the northern lights is attributed to heightened solar activity. NASA reports that the sun has been active due to the anticipated peak of Solar Cycle 25, its 11-year cycle, expected to occur between late 2024 and early 2026. This has resulted in more sunspots and coronal mass ejections, events that enhance the aurora borealis. Last month, a robust geomagnetic storm even pulled the northern lights as far south as Texas.
