In a recent development, former New York lawmaker George Santos has filed a lawsuit against Jimmy Kimmel, as well as ABC and Disney, in federal court on Saturday. Santos alleges that Kimmel deceived him by requesting Cameo videos under false pretenses. The disgraced ex-Congressman is seeking at least $750,000 in damages for copyright infringement, fraudulent inducement, breach of contract, and unjust enrichment.
According to the lawsuit, Kimmel submitted 14 Cameo video requests using phony names and narratives, in violation of the personal use license restrictions. The suit claims that Kimmel chose personal use licenses with the intention of broadcasting the videos on national television, which constitutes copyright infringement.
Jimmy Kimmel Live! aired the clips starting from December 7 and later posted them on YouTube. Santos's lawyer issued a Cease and Desist Letter on December 12, demanding the removal of the content from online platforms. Santos is asking for $150,000 in statutory damages per alleged infringement and a permanent injunction against distributing or promoting the videos.
Kimmel had reportedly joked about being sued by Santos, calling it a "dream come true." The Independent has reached out to the lawyers representing Santos and the representatives of ABC and Disney for further comments on the matter.
