In a tragic incident that shocked the community, the victims of a horrifying double murder in Miami over the weekend have been identified as ex-college hockey players. Roommates Sidney Capolino, 23, of Pawling, New York, and Meghan Moore, 25, of Centerville, Massachusetts, were brutally shot dead by Moore's enraged former boyfriend at their apartment complex, according to the local police.
The suspect, identified as 40-year-old restaurant worker Luis Nopales, allegedly shot Moore - with whom he had a past romantic relationship - outside the residence before entering the apartment and killing Capolino. Nopales then turned the gun on himself. All three individuals had been living together in the apartment, authorities confirmed.
Capolino and Moore, described as best friends by relatives, were former ice hockey teammates at New England College in New Hampshire. The news of their untimely deaths has deeply saddened the campus community. School president Dr. Wayne F. Lesperance Jr. expressed his condolences, stating, "Meghan and Sidney were known to many on campus, and we are deeply saddened by this devastating news. We are keeping Sidney and Meghan's families and friends in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time." The college confirmed that Moore had graduated in 2021, while Capolino graduated in 2022.
Relatives of Moore, reached by phone, expressed their shock and declined to comment further. The incident unfolded on Saturday morning when police responded to the apartment complex in Coral Gables after a neighbor reported hearing gunshots. Upon arrival, they found Moore severely injured just outside their apartment door, and unfortunately, another shot was fired. Upon entering the residence, officers discovered both Capolino and Nopales dead from gunshot wounds.
A close friend of Moore revealed that she and Nopales had a troubled relationship, describing it as volatile. "You could tell that there were some issues there," she said. "But not to this point. We can't believe this happened."
Background checks revealed that Nopales had been evicted from a Coral Gables apartment due to non-payment in late 2023. In a note to the court, he claimed that he had lost his restaurant job and was unable to pay the monthly rent of $2,300. He assured the court of a new job that would help him clear the debt, but he was eventually forced out of the apartment.
As investigations continue, the police have not yet disclosed an official motive for the slayings, leaving the community shaken and searching for answers. The loss of two promising lives in such a senseless act of violence has left friends, family, and the entire community devastated, seeking solace in shared memories of Sidney Capolino and Meghan Moore.
