Elon Musk Addresses Panel Gap Concerns on Tesla Cybertruck

In a recent review of the Tesla Cybertruck by tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee, concerns regarding panel gaps on the electric pickup were raised. Brownlee pointed out an alignment issue with his door, describing it as "the worst I've ever seen in a production vehicle." Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, quickly responded to the criticism and provided an explanation for the issue.
Brownlee highlighted the significant gap in the driver's side door, commenting that it appeared as if the door was still partially open even when closed. He speculated that it might require a visit to a Tesla service center to address the issue, stating that it was something buyers of low VIN (vehicle identification number) Cybertrucks might have to deal with.
Musk responded to a screen grab of the door gap from Brownlee's review, acknowledging that the issue had been observed in around 15 Cybertrucks. He clarified that it was not a "door fit" issue but rather a problem with the door striker. Musk explained that insufficient torque after door fit had caused the door striker to loosen in the field. However, this issue has reportedly been promptly addressed in production, requiring a quick 5-minute fix at a Tesla service center.
Miles Somerville, a producer on Brownlee's show, revealed a temporary fix for the gap issue using gaffers tape. By applying tape to the door striker, which is the metal clip that the door latches onto, Somerville was able to make it flush with the vehicle. While he expressed his frustration at the need for such a fix, Somerville believed that ensuring a properly functioning door striker should be a relatively simple task upon delivery.
This is not the first time concerns about panel alignment on the Tesla Cybertruck have been raised. Even prior to the start of deliveries in November, Tesla fans had noticed prototypes with poor panel alignment. The Wall Street Journal reported last year that the Cybertruck's stainless steel body, made from metal that comes in large coils, is prone to curving and attempting to regain its original shape, resulting in panel alignment issues.
It appears that Musk had already acknowledged the need for extreme accuracy in measurements during the design phase of the Cybertruck. CNBC previously reported that Musk had emailed staff in August, explaining that any dimensional variation in the truck's design would be highly noticeable.
As the Tesla Cybertruck continues to make waves in the automotive industry, it is clear that Musk and his team are committed to promptly addressing any quality concerns raised by customers and reviewers alike. With changes implemented in production to rectify the door striker issue, Tesla seeks to ensure that the panel gaps on their innovative electric pickup meet the highest standards of quality.
