In a tragic incident at a Mexican beachside resort, an El Paso woman is suing Sonoran Sea Resort in Puerto Peñasco after her husband was electrocuted in a hot tub. Lizzette Zambrano, 35, is currently in critical condition and seeks over $1 million in damages from the resort.
According to the lawsuit, Zambrano's husband, Jorge Guillen, 43, was allegedly electrocuted upon entering the jacuzzi, and Zambrano herself was shocked when she tried to help him out of the water. Other resort visitors who attempted to assist the couple were also shocked.
The lawsuit claims that the resort staff took 10 minutes to respond, during which time Guillen was electrocuted and tragically drowned. It further alleges that the resort should have been aware of the faulty electrical wiring in the jacuzzi and should have displayed warning signs to alert visitors of the danger.
Following the incident, Zambrano was airlifted to a Phoenix-area hospital, where she remains in critical condition. Sadly, Guillen was pronounced dead on the scene. The case, Lizette Zambrano et al. v. Casago, LLC, et al., has been filed in El Paso County under cause no. 2024DCV2838.
In response to the incident, Paranjpe, the attorney representing Zambrano, stated, "There is no reason this should have happened. Hotels and resorts have a duty to ensure guest safety. At no point did resort staff think to engage an emergency shut-off, not to mention warn guests of a faulty, dangerous amenity."
The General Prosecutor's Office of Justice of the State of Sonora is currently investigating the origin of the electrical discharge that caused Guillen's death and injured Zambrano.
Meanwhile, the attorneys representing Zambrano have requested the court to prevent the resort from repairing the jacuzzi, as it may serve as critical evidence in the case.
Video footage capturing the aftermath of the incident has been circulating on social media and various national news outlets, revealing the chaos as dozens of people frantically sought help around the hot tub.
As the investigation unfolds and legal proceedings continue, the focus remains on seeking justice for the tragic incident that claimed Guillen's life and left Zambrano fighting for hers. The resort now faces a significant lawsuit that emphasizes guest safety and accountability.
