In a concerning outbreak of violence, eight juveniles were shot at a SEPTA bus stop in Philadelphia's Burholme neighborhood on Wednesday afternoon. The incident marks the fourth shooting involving a SEPTA bus in less than a week.
According to Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel, the shooting occurred at around 3 p.m. at the intersection of Rising Sun and Cottman avenues. The victims, all students from Northeast High School, were waiting for the bus when three gunmen exited a vehicle and opened fire. Authorities have confirmed that over 30 shots were fired during the horrifying incident.
Tragically, one of the students is listed in critical condition at a local hospital. As of now, there is no update on the conditions of the other seven victims. The suspects, who were wearing masks, quickly fled the scene in a dark blue Hyundai Elantra with paper tags. Police are actively searching for three shooters and a driver.
Eyewitnesses reported the sound of gunshots ringing out, prompting a woman who works nearby at Quaker Diner to rush to the scene and assist the wounded juveniles. She expressed her shock at the incident, stating, "These children are dying every day out here, somebody's got to do something. This doesn't happen in this neighborhood."
The shooting also resulted in damage to two SEPTA buses, specifically a Route 18 bus and a Route 67 bus, which were struck by gunfire near the bus stop. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries to passengers or SEPTA employees.
This incident follows a string of recent shootings involving SEPTA buses. On Sunday, Sawee Kofa, 27, was shot and killed after an argument on a SEPTA bus in Oxford Circle. On Monday, a teenager was killed and four others were injured in a shooting at a bus stop in the city's Ogontz neighborhood. Additionally, on Tuesday night, a man was fatally shot on a Route 79 bus in South Philadelphia.
SEPTA has vowed to take an "aggressive" approach to combating gun violence in light of these recent bus shootings. The transportation authority is working closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety and security of their passengers.
As authorities continue their investigation and search for the suspects, residents and families in Philadelphia remain on edge, hoping for swift justice and an end to the senseless violence plaguing their communities.
