In a stunning display of maneuvering and strategic trading, the Philadelphia Eagles have managed to turn the Carson Wentz trade with the Indianapolis Colts into a series of valuable assets that have greatly benefited their roster. Three years after the initial trade, the Eagles can now reflect on their acquisitions and celebrate the successful transformation of their team.
The trade, which took place after a disappointing 2020 season for the Eagles, saw Wentz being sent to the Colts in exchange for a 2021-third-round pick and a conditional 2022 second-rounder. The conditional pick turned into a first-rounder after Wentz played over 75% of the snaps in the 2021 season, instantly becoming a highly valuable asset for the Eagles.
Months later, the Eagles utilized the 2021 third-round pick acquired from the Colts in a trade with the Dallas Cowboys. This trade allowed them to move up in the draft and select University of Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith with the 10th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Smith has since formed a formidable wide receiver tandem with A.J. Brown and signed a contract extension that will keep him in Philadelphia until the 2028 season.
With Wentz meeting the playing time threshold in 2021, the conditional second-round pick from the Colts was upgraded to a first-rounder in the 2022 NFL Draft, bolstering the Eagles' draft capital. In a blockbuster deal with the New Orleans Saints, the Eagles traded one of their first-round picks from 2022 to 2023, acquiring a 2023 first-round pick, a 2024 second-round pick, and additional draft selections.
During the 2022 NFL Draft, the Eagles further capitalized on their assets by trading the No. 18 overall pick and a third-round pick to acquire Tennessee Titans wide receiver A.J. Brown. The addition of Brown revolutionized the Eagles' offense and facilitated the development of Jalen Hurts as one of the top quarterbacks in the league.
Further utilizing the assets acquired from the Saints, the Eagles traded up in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft to select University of Kansas linebacker Kyron Johnson. However, Johnson was ultimately waived by the team before the 2023 season.
The 2023 first-round pick acquired from the Saints became the No. 10 overall pick, which the Eagles traded up to No. 9 with the Chicago Bears. They selected University of Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter, who made an immediate impact in his rookie season, earning recognition as the runner-up for the Associated Press Defensive Rookie of the Year Award.
In a recent move, the Eagles traded their 2024 second-round pick to the Washington Commanders to select University of Iowa defensive back Cooper DeJean. DeJean is highly regarded as a versatile player with the ability to excel at both cornerback and safety positions, making him a valuable addition to the Eagles' defense.
Meanwhile, Wentz has struggled since leaving the Eagles, going from team to team. He has now signed with the Kansas City Chiefs to serve as a backup to Patrick Mahomes.
The Eagles' ability to capitalize on the assets acquired from the Carson Wentz trade has significantly strengthened their roster. General manager Howie Roseman's strategic maneuvering has resulted in the acquisition of two star wide receivers in Smith and Brown, as well as two top-tier draft prospects in Carter and DeJean. The Eagles can now look ahead to a promising future, while Wentz attempts to find stability with his new team.
