In an introductory news conference held on Tuesday, Dusty May wasted no time in sharing his goals as the newly appointed head coach of the Michigan basketball team. May, who led Florida Atlantic to an unexpected Final Four run last season, expressed his desire for the team to not only win championships but also to captivate fans and showcase an enjoyable style of play.

May's hiring came after his former team, Florida Atlantic, suffered a loss to Northwestern in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Following the game, May was contacted by Michigan and met with athletic director Warde Manuel on Saturday. Impressed by the university's facilities during a tour of Ann Arbor, May signed a lucrative five-year contract worth $19 million on Sunday.

Although May had been linked to the opening at Louisville, Michigan emerged as the clear frontrunner from the beginning of the search process. The coach strongly emphasized that Michigan felt like the right fit for him and his family, praising the positive feedback he received during the hiring process.

Taking charge of a team that endured a difficult 8-24 season and finished last in the Big Ten Conference, May faces the challenge of rebuilding the program. He plans to utilize both recruiting and the transfer portal as he seeks to bring in talented student-athletes who align with Michigan's academic mission.

When it comes to the team's style of play, May hinted that his Michigan squad may not rely as heavily on three-pointers as his previous team at Florida Atlantic, at least initially. He expressed his desire for a fast-paced, free-flowing game, ensuring the defense is kept off balance. May emphasized a player-centric approach, where the team's style of play revolves around maximizing the strengths of the key players.

Originally from Peoria, Illinois, May brings a wealth of coaching experience to Michigan. He began his coaching career at Eastern Michigan and has since held positions at Murray State, UAB, Louisiana Tech, and Florida. Notably, two of May's three sons are college basketball players, with Jack May playing for Florida and Charlie May representing Central Florida.

As Dusty May begins his tenure as the head coach of the Michigan basketball team, fans eagerly await the revitalization of the program and the implementation of his exciting and enjoyable style of play.
