In a recent post on his social media platform, Truth Social, former President Donald Trump once again targeted the daughter of the judge presiding over his upcoming criminal hush money trial. This comes just a day after Judge Juan Merchan imposed a gag order on Trump, limiting his ability to discuss the case publicly.
Trump, in his Truth Social post, criticized Judge Merchan, referring to him as a "hater" and renewing his call for the judge to recuse himself from the case. Trump cited the judge's daughter's involvement in progressive politics, along with a social media account he claims to belong to her, as evidence that a fair trial would be "completely impossible."
According to Trump, Merchan's daughter represents prominent Democratic figures such as Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and Adam Schiff, and has allegedly posted a picture of Trump behind bars, signaling her "obvious goal." This is the second consecutive day that Trump has highlighted Merchan's daughter's role as a president at Authentic Campaigns, a Democratic political consulting firm, boasting its work for Biden and other Democratic groups.
Trump speculated that the judge's apparent bias could stem from his daughter's financial gain through working to "Get Trump." He raised questions about how such a conflict of interest could be allowed in the case.
Trump's attorney, Todd Blanche, declined to comment on these recent posts in light of the gag order's restrictions. The posts mark a continuation of Trump's persistent attacks on Judge Merchan, which intensified after the judge set a trial date for April 15th. The charges against Trump include 34 counts of falsifying business records to hide hush money payments made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels.
Notably, Trump's latest attacks on the judge's daughter went beyond previous comments, alleging that she had recently posted a picture of him behind bars on a social media account associated with her. However, it is unclear if the account currently belongs to Merchan's daughter, as it joined in April 2023, months after Authentic last referenced it on social media.
The gag order imposed on Trump does not completely restrict him from discussing his critics. He is still allowed to criticize the prosecutor in his case, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. However, public statements about likely witnesses, jurors, lawyers, court staff, and their family members are explicitly prohibited if made to intentionally interfere with the proceedings.
Judge Merchan justified the gag order by highlighting Trump's past threatening, inflammatory, and denigrating statements about various individuals involved in the case. He emphasized that such statements risked impeding the orderly administration of the court and expressed concern for the potential harm faced by his family member.
It should be noted that Trump's attorneys previously mentioned Merchan's daughter's work in an attempt to persuade the judge to recuse himself. However, Merchan declined to do so in August.
As the trial date draws nearer, Trump's social media attacks on Merchan's daughter attract attention and raise questions about the limits of free speech amidst legal proceedings. The impact of these digital confrontations on the integrity and fairness of the trial remains to be seen.
