Luxury fashion brand Dolce & Gabbana has recently unveiled a new alcohol-free perfume for dogs named 'Fefé,' paying homage to Domenico Dolce's cherished poodle. However, the release of the fragrance has sparked a heated debate among veterinarians and pet owners, with concerns being raised about its safety and appropriateness for our furry friends.
Priced at 99 euros ($108) for a 100 milliliter (3.4 ounces) bottle, the 'Fefé' perfume is certified as suitable for animal use, following the rigorous standards of the Safe Pet Cosmetics protocol. Dolce & Gabbana proudly announced that their participation in the compliance recognition program by Bureau Veritas Italia ensures the safety and well-being of animals.
While the fashion house claims that the fragrance has garnered positive feedback from veterinarians and customers, the use of perfumes on dogs remains a contentious issue within the veterinary community. Some experts argue that the scents may interfere with the dog's sense of smell, an essential part of their identity and understanding of the world.
According to Federico Coccía, a veterinarian in Rome with a doctorate from the University of Teramo, the distinctive smells are crucial for dogs in recognizing people and identifying potential health issues. Coccia emphasizes that altering their natural scent can hinder his diagnosis, particularly when investigating dermatological diseases or other complications related to smell.
On the other hand, those in favor of pet fragrances, such as groomers, see them as an extension of the bond between pet and owner. Aliof Rilova Tano, a dog groomer at La Boutique delle Birbe parlor in Rome, considers fragrances for pets to be a pleasant addition, given that dogs are often an integral part of our lives.
While some pet owners welcome the use of perfumes, others express concerns about the humanization of animals. Francesca Castelli, a dog-owner in Rome's Villa Borghese, finds the idea of using brand perfumes on dogs to be excessive and unnecessary.
As the debate unfolds, Dolce & Gabbana's venture into the world of dog perfumes continues to attract both criticism and support. The fashion house maintains that 'Fefé' offers a gentle fragrance well-accepted by dogs, but it remains up to pet owners to decide whether enhancing their companions' aroma is a step too far in the realm of canine care.
