**"Disney's Moana 2 Makes Waves in International Box Office with Record-Breaking Start"**
Disney's "Moana 2" is making a significant impact in its early international box office markets, earning $8.8 million from just 10 regions on Wednesday, topping the charts in each. The sequel achieved remarkable success in France, boasting the best opening day of 2024 and the second highest animated opening day on record. Indonesia also celebrated an impressive milestone with its top animated launch day ever.
By Wednesday, the film's global total had reached $66.3 million, showcasing the strong performances in domestic markets. Interestingly, these exceptional numbers are being recorded despite this not being a major holiday period overseas, highlighting the movie's broad appeal. Industry projections suggest that "Moana 2" could surpass $100 million internationally by Sunday, depending on its continued success in early markets.
In France, "Moana 2" earned $3.7 million on Wednesday, marking the second-largest animated opening ever, following "Incredibles 2." This opening day was 302% higher than the original "Moana" and outperformed other Disney hits like "Frozen 2" by 43% and "Inside Out 2" by 44%. Indonesia saw a $1.2 million debut, setting a record for the biggest animated opening day ever in the country and capturing 83% of the market share, significantly outpacing its predecessor and other animated favorites.
In Korea, despite heavy snowfall—the most in November in 117 years around Seoul—"Moana 2" generated $1.1 million, giving it the third-highest opening day for a Walt Disney Animation Studios/Pixar film. The film's launch outpaced the original "Moana" by 154%, "Finding Dory" by 150%, and "Incredibles 2" by 54%. In Italy, the movie posted a $900,000 opening, making it the second-best launch day for a Disney animation title in the country, falling just behind "Ralph Breaks the Internet."
The Philippines also showed strong box office numbers with $700,000, achieving the second-best animated debut behind "Inside Out 2" and setting a record for the second-best non-local start of 2024. These figures were significantly higher than those of "Finding Dory," "Incredibles 2," "Moana," and "Frozen 2."
As more markets like Germany, Mexico, Australia, and Brazil open on Thursday, and with the UK, Spain, and China following on Friday, "Moana 2" is set to capture around 90% of the international footprint by the end of its opening session. Japan will join the wave a week later, on December 6, potentially adding to the film's global success.
