Disneyland Resort, located in Anaheim, California, has received approval for a major expansion project that aims to bring new attractions and entertainment to the theme park over the next four decades. The city's Planning Commission reviewed and gave the green light to the "multi-billion-dollar DisneylandForward project," as reported by FOX 11 Los Angeles.
The proposed expansion could potentially introduce new themed lands similar to the popular Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, which debuted in 2019 at Disneyland. Rachel Alde, Disney's senior vice president of global development and finance, expressed the company's enthusiasm for exploring and sharing untold stories such as 'Wakanda,' 'Coco,' 'Frozen,' and 'Zootopia,' according to the Associated Press.
Despite the expansion, Disney's current 490-acre footprint will not be increased, nor will the existing build allowances change. However, the project does present an opportunity for Disney to utilize its 50-acre parking lot by creating exciting rides and entertainment attractions. Disney California Adventure Park, a 55-acre park that is part of the resort, was similarly constructed on a former Disneyland parking lot and opened in 2001, according to D23: The Official Disney Fan Club.
Suzi Brown, a representative from Disneyland, highlighted the goal of creating a more integrated experience for guests. Under the new plans, hotels could be situated alongside attractions, resulting in a more immersive and convenient visit for visitors.
Disneyland, which first opened its doors in 1955, continues to attract millions of visitors each year. In 2022, it was the second-most visited theme park in the world, welcoming a staggering 16.8 million people, according to the Themed Entertainment Association and AECOM report.
With the approval of the DisneylandForward project, Disney's expansion plans are set to transform the popular theme park into an even more captivating and enchanting destination for guests from around the globe. The excitement is palpable as fans eagerly await the unveiling of the new immersive lands and attractions that will undoubtedly enhance the magical experience Disneyland offers.
