Article:
The Dow Jones Industrial Average came to a halt on Wednesday, ending its seven-day winning streak, while other major indexes managed to eke out a fractional gain in a relatively quiet market day. However, entertainment giant Disney and a favored stock of Cathie Wood, the prominent fund manager, stole the spotlight as they soared on robust earnings reports.
At the closing bell, the Dow Jones was down 0.1%, while the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq hovered just above the break-even point, with light economic data impacting the overall market sentiment. Although volume on the New York Stock Exchange declined, the Nasdaq saw a higher number of trades compared to Tuesday.
In the stock market today, the small-cap Russell 2000 index underperformed, falling 1.1%. However, the Innovator IBD 50 (FFTY) ETF fared better, experiencing only a slight decline of 0.1%.
Disney, a Dow component, experienced a minor decrease during the regular session on Wednesday. However, its stock climbed after hours following the release of its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings report. The results exceeded analysts' expectations, with revenue reaching $21.2 billion and earnings per share totaling 82 cents, a significant increase from 30 cents compared to the previous year. Although Disney's sales fell slightly short of estimates, with analysts forecasting $21.4 billion, investors responded positively to the overall strong performance. The company recently cleared its 50-day moving average, indicating positive momentum in the stock.
Another notable stock that gained attention was Roblox, which surged over 10% on its earnings report. This metaverse play is held by all three of Cathie Wood's Ark Invest ETFs, including Ark Fintech Innovation ETF (ARKF), ARK Next-Gen Internet ETF (ARKW), and Ark Innovation ETF (ARKK). Roblox shares gapped up above the 200-day moving average and retained the bulk of its gains throughout the trading day, reflecting positive investor sentiment towards Wood's investment choices.
In the tech sector, Microsoft continued its upward trajectory, inching closer to a buy point of 366.78, while Apple also showed promise after successfully crossing its 50-day moving average.
Generic drugmaker Teva also had a positive day, retaking its 50-day moving average following a strong earnings report. The company additionally announced plans to separate its active pharmaceutical ingredients business, further boosting investor confidence.
However, not all stocks fared well. Gilead, a pharmaceutical company, experienced a dip in its stock price after raising its outlook based on a bullish view for its Covid drug Veklury. The company's projections did not account for the unpredictable nature of Covid-related hospitalizations, which fluctuate with infection rates. Nonetheless, Gilead managed to regain some ground, crossing the 50-day line in late trading.
In the payment industry, Shift4 Payments received a significant boost after announcing a potential buyout that could lead to the company going private. The stock surpassed its 50-day moving average, demonstrating strong investor interest in the potential deal.
Amidst the earnings reports, Akamai, an enterprise software maker, saw its stock rise after beating Wall Street estimates. The company's shift towards a product mix with higher margins contributed to its positive performance, with shares now in a buy zone.
Axon, a taser manufacturer, surged past a buy zone following its earnings report. The company expects sales of $418.5 million for the fourth quarter, with full-year sales projected to reach $1.55 billion.
Overall, while the Dow Jones ended its winning streak, Disney and stocks held by Cathie Wood's ETFs drove significant market gains with strong earnings reports. The tech sector also showed promise, while some pharmaceutical stocks faced challenges due to unforeseen circumstances related to the ongoing pandemic. Investors will closely monitor these developments as they navigate the stock market landscape.
