The Arizona Diamondbacks have announced that catcher Gabriel Moreno has been placed on the 10-day injured list following a sprained left thumb. In his absence, Jose Herrera has been called up from Triple-A to team up with Tucker Barnhart as Arizona's catching duo.
Moreno sustained the injury during last night's game when a foul ball from Cristian Pache struck his glove hand in the third inning. Despite trying to tough it out, the discomfort eventually forced Moreno to exit the game early in the sixth frame. Fortunately, x-rays revealed no structural damage, alleviating concerns of a more severe injury that could have sidelined him for an extended period or even threatened his season.
Considered one of baseball's top prospects during his time in the Blue Jays' farm system, Moreno, along with Lourdes Gurriel Jr., was acquired by the Diamondbacks during the 2022-23 offseason in a trade involving Daulton Varsho. In his first full season, Moreno made his mark by winning a Gold Glove, hitting an impressive .284/.339/.408 in 380 plate appearances, and contributing significantly to Arizona's playoff run to the NL pennant, solidifying his status as a rising star in the sport.
However, Moreno's sophomore season has been marred by a slump. He currently holds a disappointing .230/.313/.346 batting line with only three home runs over 217 plate appearances. A low batting average on balls in play (BABIP) of .261 has further hindered his efforts, and Moreno has struggled to make solid contact at the plate. On a positive note, his strikeout and walk rates remain above average, and his defensive prowess continues to shine.
With Moreno now on the injured list, the Diamondbacks will rely on the collaborative efforts of Herrera and Barnhart behind the plate. Both catchers have shown their abilities throughout their careers and will be instrumental in maintaining Arizona's defensive stability and offensive production while Moreno recovers.
The Diamondbacks will be hoping for a speedy recovery for Moreno as they look to regain momentum in the season. In the meantime, the team will count on Herrera to step up and provide a reliable presence behind the plate alongside Barnhart.
