In an exciting move, the Detroit Tigers have brought back first baseman Spencer Torkelson from Triple-A Toledo. Torkelson, who was the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2020, returns to the Tigers lineup after a stint in the minor leagues.
According to sources close to the team, Torkelson's recall was made just before Saturday's game against the New York Yankees at Comerica Park. The 25-year-old slugger had been playing for the Mud Hens, where he showcased his power by hitting 11 home runs in 58 games. He compiled a batting average of .239 along with an impressive .799 OPS.
Torkelson's previous stint with the Tigers ended on June 1 when he was optioned to Triple-A for the second time in three seasons. However, the recent optioning of Bligh Madris, the Tigers' primary first baseman against right-handed pitchers, created an opportunity for Torkelson's return to the big leagues.
During his time with the Mud Hens, Torkelson displayed improvements in his performance against high-velocity fastballs. He recorded a batting average of .268, an .840 OPS, and a reduced whiff rate of 21.6% on fastballs registering at least 93 mph. This bodes well for Torkelson's ability to handle high-velocity pitches in the major leagues.
While Torkelson's contact rate has remained consistent, there are concerns about his struggles against sliders and changeups. Against sliders, he only managed a batting average of .197 and a high 47% whiff rate with the Mud Hens. Even his expected batting average on sliders was lower than his actual average. Additionally, Torkelson experienced swing-and-miss issues against changeups.
Despite these challenges, the Tigers firmly believe that Torkelson is an integral part of their future plans. Scott Harris, the president of baseball operations, expressed his confidence in Torkelson's abilities and his potential to make a significant impact for the team.
Torkelson's first stint with the Tigers in the 2024 season saw him play 54 games, where he hit .201 with four home runs, 16 walks, and 56 strikeouts, accumulating a .597 OPS. With a career batting average of .218 and a .683 OPS in 232 MLB games, Torkelson aims to improve his performance and solidify his position in the Tigers lineup.
The return of Spencer Torkelson provides an exciting boost to the Detroit Tigers as they continue their quest for success in the 2024 season. Fans and teammates alike are eager to see the talented first baseman back in action, hopeful that he will showcase his power and contribute to the team's offensive efforts.
