The Detroit Tigers have made the decision to place shortstop Javier Baez on the 10-day injured list due to lumbar spine inflammation. This move is retroactive to Sunday, indicating that Baez has been dealing with the injury for a few days.
Baez, a two-time All-Star, has struggled at the plate this season, currently holding a batting average of just .183. In 53 games, he has managed to hit only one home run and drive in 25 RBIs. With these underwhelming statistics, the Tigers have decided that it is best for Baez to take some time off to recover and regain his form.
The 31-year-old infielder has had a lengthy career in the major leagues, playing for the Chicago Cubs from 2014 to 2021, then joining the New York Mets briefly in 2021 before eventually landing with the Tigers. Throughout his career, Baez has maintained a career batting average of .252, hitting 176 home runs and driving in 616 RBIs in a total of 1,195 games.
As a corresponding move, the Tigers have chosen to recall shortstop Ryan Kreidler from Triple-A Toledo. Kreidler, 26, has been performing moderately well in the minor leagues, holding a batting average of .160. In nine games for the Mud Hens, he has hit one home run and driven in five RBIs.
The Detroit Tigers will now rely on Kreidler to fill the void left by Baez's absence. It remains to be seen how long Baez will be sidelined with his spine inflammation, but the team is hopeful that with proper rest and treatment, he will make a full recovery and return to the field soon.
In the meantime, Tigers fans will keep a close eye on Kreidler's performance as he steps up to the plate as the team's shortstop.
