In a positive turn of events, the Detroit Lions saw three of their key players return from the injury list and participate in the opening practice of their 2024 training camp. While the team had to add four players to the injury list at the start of camp, the return of these three players brings some much-needed optimism to the Lions' camp.
Rookie offensive tackle Giovanni Manu, who had been placed on the Non-Football Injury list, was cleared to rejoin the team. In addition, defensive back Brian Branch and defensive end Marcus Davenport were both activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list.
Head coach Dan Campbell shared his excitement about their return, stating, "You'll see Davenport out there today, you'll see Branch out there today in walkthrough, so these guys are slowly going... I think Davenport is going to be a little quicker than Branch is, but they'll both be out there in some capacity, which is a good sign. So, no setbacks, we're moving right along."
Davenport had been dealing with a high ankle sprain that kept him sidelined for most of the 2023 season with the Minnesota Vikings. However, the indications are that he is progressing well in his recovery and should soon be at full health. Branch, on the other hand, underwent a lower body procedure during the offseason and spent the spring in a boot and a mobility scooter. Nevertheless, he too appears to be on track with his rehabilitation.
During the practice session, both Davenport and Branch were limited in their participation, understandably so given their recent injuries. However, the fact that they were back on the field and taking part in some capacity is undoubtedly a positive sign for the team.
The reasoning behind Manu's initial placement on the NFI list remains unclear. However, it seems that he was not limited during Wednesday's practice, indicating that he is ready to make an impact for the Lions.
One player conspicuously absent from practice was rookie guard Christian Mahogany. It is unclear whether he is dealing with an injury or another matter that prevented him from participating.
As the Detroit Lions navigate their training camp, the return of these three players provides a much-needed boost to the team's morale and depth. With Davenport and Branch gradually increasing their involvement and Manu showcasing no signs of limitation, the Lions can hope for a successful and injury-free campaign in the upcoming season.
