In the midst of the 2024 NFL Draft's "lying season," the Detroit Lions appear to be actively preparing their fans for a potential trade out of the first round. Coach Dan Campbell recently discussed the possibility during an interview with local radio station 97.1 The Ticket.
When asked if the fact that the NFL Draft was being held in Detroit would affect their decision to trade out of the first round, Campbell responded, "Here's what I'd say, well then all you've got to do is, it's one sleep and then you get two picks. That's what I would've told the kids when they're young."
Campbell further emphasized the team's preparedness, stating, "Anything can happen. We're prepared to do whatever we need to do. Look, if our guy's not there-we're sitting there and our guy's not there-we will move back. So I'm just preparing the fans. Be ready. You never know what's going to happen here."
These remarks echo the sentiments expressed by Lions General Manager Brad Holmes during his pre-draft press conference. Holmes explained that the organization's priority is to do what's best for the team, even if it means trading down.
"We have to do the right thing for the organization. If it makes sense and it lines up and it's the right thing to do, then we have to do the right thing," Holmes said. "Say that happens where the fans have been waiting there all night for this pick and we get an offer that we can't really turn down and makes sense, we've got to do the right thing and hopefully our fans will forgive us."
While the Lions have not been actively discussing a trade down, they have been open and transparent about their decision-making process under Campbell and Holmes. It is clear that they have been seriously considering the possibility of trading out of the first round.
Fans should take Campbell at his word that if the team is not convinced about a particular prospect at the 29th pick, they will explore all options to trade down. The Lions' openness about their intentions reinforces the notion that they are actively considering this strategy.
As the NFL Draft approaches, speculation continues to swirl regarding which direction the Detroit Lions will take. With their willingness to trade down, the team aims to make the best decision for their organization's long-term success. Only time will tell how the events unfold on draft night.
