In the midst of the NFL offseason, the Detroit Lions are focused on extending contracts for key players entering the final year of their deals. Quarterback Jared Goff and left tackle Taylor Decker provided updates on Tuesday regarding ongoing discussions between their agents and the Lions.
Goff, who joined the Lions in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams, expressed his desire to stay in Detroit for the long term. Although he did not provide detailed information about the progress of the negotiations, Goff hinted at positive conversations with the Lions' front office.
The quarterback is currently in the final year of a four-year, $134 million contract extension he signed with the Rams in 2019. This season, Goff's cap hit will amount to $32.3 million, including a $22.3 million salary, a $5 million roster bonus, and an additional $5 million from the signing bonus he received after restructuring his contract with the Lions in 2021.
Speculation suggests that Goff's next deal could potentially exceed $45-50 million per year, joining a select group of quarterbacks with lucrative contracts. Currently, only Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson, and Jalen Hurts are averaging more than $50 million annually. Meanwhile, Kyler Murray, Deshaun Watson, Patrick Mahomes, and Kirk Cousins fall into the $45-46.1 million range.
On the other hand, Taylor Decker, the Lions' dependable left tackle, revealed that preliminary talks have begun for a possible extension. At 31 years old, Decker acknowledged the potential impact of the upcoming NFL Draft on his contract negotiations, with Detroit possibly targeting offensive line talent, including tackles like Penei Sewell, in the early rounds.
While Decker is aware of the moving parts and understands the team's need to sign other players, he remains optimistic about reaching an agreement that suits both parties. Although the talks are in their early stages, Decker emphasized that the conversations have been amicable so far.
The Lions' general manager, Brad Holmes, has not set a specific deadline for completing these contract extensions, and neither Goff nor Decker mentioned any timeframe they are aiming for. Thus, it remains uncertain when or if the negotiations will progress.
As the offseason continues, the Lions are committed to securing the futures of key players like Goff and Decker. These extensions will not only solidify the team's roster but also indicate their determination to build and maintain a competitive environment for success on the field.
