In a show of deep divisions within the Democratic Party, President Biden's upcoming State of the Union address has raised concerns among Democrats as to how he will address the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza. Last week, over 100,000 Michigan primary voters selected "uncommitted" over Biden, highlighting the party's split on the issue and casting doubts on Biden's prospects in the state he narrowly won in the 2020 election.

Progressives and left-wing hard-liners have been urging Biden to take a more aggressive stance against Israel's invasion of Gaza, citing the significant loss of lives and the worsening humanitarian crisis in the region. Moderates, on the other hand, argue for the president to stand firmly by Israel's mission to eradicate Hamas.

The divisions are evident even within the House of Representatives, where lawmakers voiced differing opinions on how Biden should address the issue in his speech. Representative Dan Kildee of Michigan called for Biden to explicitly condemn Israel's actions in Gaza, pointing to reports of the tense relationship between Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which has only intensified with the ongoing war.

Meanwhile, Representative Debbie Dingell, also from Michigan, went a step further and urged Biden to call for a temporary cease-fire in his address. Dingell emphasized the need to bring back the hostages and provide humanitarian aid, expressing sadness at the loss of innocent lives, particularly children.

In contrast, Representative Tom Suozzi of New York urged Biden to show strong support for Israel, stressing the threat posed by Hamas and the importance of combating terrorism. Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland took a more balanced approach, suggesting that Biden propose a strategy to end the cycle of violence and resolve the underlying political issues.

The conflict between Israel and Gaza was sparked by a surprise invasion by Hamas militants on October 7, resulting in the deaths of over 1,000 people, mostly Israeli civilians. The Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry, which does not differentiate between fighters and civilians, claims that more than 30,000 Palestinians have died during Israel's response.

It remains uncertain if Biden will address the conflict in his State of the Union speech, as the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the matter. Democrats will be closely watching to see how - and if - the president broaches the topic, as his approach could have significant implications for party unity and electoral support.
