In a move to address a recent controversy, Delta Air Lines is implementing a new uniform policy after two employees were photographed wearing Palestinian flag pins. The incident sparked outrage on social media and prompted the airline to take action.
According to international media reports, the revised uniform policy will go into effect on Monday. The badges worn by the flight attendants were seen as a show of support for Gaza and Palestinian statehood during the Israel-Hamas conflict. However, some online users referred to them as "Hamas badges," leading to further backlash.
Delta's spokeswoman clarified on Saturday that the flight attendants in question had complied with the airline's previous uniform guidelines. She stated, "Contrary to further chatter on social media platforms, neither has been terminated." Delta has reached out to the employees to offer support.
The controversy surrounding the flag pins was not the only problem for Delta on social media. A response from the airline's social media account, which has since been deleted, drew criticism for sympathizing with "terrified" passengers. The Council of American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) shared the response and called for an apology and an opportunity for employee education on anti-Palestinian racism.
Delta complied with CAIR's demands and retracted the post, apologizing for any hurt caused. The airline emphasized its commitment to inclusivity and respect for all individuals, both onboard their planes and within communities.
In response to the incident, Delta's CEO, Ed Bastian, wrote a letter to the Delta Association of Flight Attendants, expressing his support for a ban on unauthorized photography of crew members and demanding an apology. Bastian highlighted that targeting individuals based on their nationality violates anti-discrimination laws and goes against Delta's values of inclusivity and respect.
It is still unclear whether the flight attendants photographed were of Palestinian descent, as the information provided did not confirm their background. However, Delta is taking steps to address the issue and promote a more inclusive environment for its employees.
The revised uniform policy is an effort by Delta Air Lines to move forward from the controversy and ensure that all employees adhere to guidelines promoting a diverse and respectful workplace.
