In a tragic incident at a hydroelectric power plant in central Italy, an explosion occurred, resulting in a number of deaths and injuries. According to Marco Masinara, the mayor of the nearby town of Camugnano, three individuals have been confirmed dead, with four others still missing.
The explosion, which took place at the dam on Lake Suviana, between the cities of Bologna and Florence, has left three others severely injured. These individuals have been rushed to the hospital, though their condition remains unknown at this time. The figures provided by the mayor are continuously being updated as the search for missing persons continues.
Firefighters swiftly responded to the incident and have successfully rescued three injured individuals from the power plant. They are currently working tirelessly to locate the missing persons in the aftermath of the explosion, as reported on the social network platform, X.
The cause of the explosion is yet to be determined, leaving investigators unsure of the events leading up to the incident. The dam, managed by the energy company Enel, experienced a fire on one of its transformers during the early afternoon. Enel promptly evacuated its workers from the site and is closely collaborating with the fire department's rescue efforts.
Mayor Masinara disclosed that the explosion occurred approximately nine levels below ground during turbine-related work. However, Enel assures that the dam basin remains undamaged, and the plant was offline during the incident, ensuring no disruption to the electricity supply.
Lake Suviana, situated in a regional park in the Apennines with an altitude of just under 500 meters, was formed between 1928 and 1932 with the construction of the dam. It serves as an essential source of hydroelectric power and an attractive recreational destination for locals and tourists alike.
As search and rescue operations continue, the community remains hopeful for the safe recovery of the missing individuals. Authorities are devoted to uncovering the cause of the explosion and implementing necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
