Manager David Moyes will be leaving West Ham United at the end of the Premier League season, as confirmed by the club. Following recent reports from Guillem Balague of BBC Sport, it is believed that former Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui has reached an agreement to replace Moyes.
Moyes, 61, has faced mounting pressure due to a string of disappointing results, including a 5-0 defeat to Chelsea on Sunday. Reflecting on his time at the club, Moyes stated, "I have enjoyed four and a half brilliant years at West Ham, and the club is in a stronger position than when I returned back in 2019."
Returning to West Ham for his second stint as manager in December 2019, Moyes led the Hammers to a historic victory in the Europa Conference League last season, the club's first major trophy in 43 years. However, the recent form of the team, with just one win in their last 10 games across all competitions, and their current position of ninth in the Premier League, makes it likely that they will miss out on European competition for the fourth consecutive season.
Moyes expressed his gratitude towards the players for their support and the success they achieved during his tenure. Meanwhile, Lopetegui, the former Spain and Real Madrid boss, is reportedly close to making a return to management with West Ham, following his departure from Wolves in August last year.
Although West Ham has confirmed that the search for Moyes' successor is underway, they will refrain from making any comments until an official appointment is made. Joint chairman David Sullivan praised Moyes for his contributions to the club, stating, "David has been an absolute professional to work with and he will leave with our greatest respect and good wishes."
Sullivan also mentioned that by announcing Moyes' departure now, it allows the manager to receive a proper send-off from the West Ham supporters during their final home fixture against Luton Town on Saturday.
Moyes had previously managed West Ham during the 2017-2018 season when he successfully steered the team away from relegation. He left the club before the appointment of Manuel Pellegrini. Returning in late 2019 with the team near the relegation zone, Moyes led them to consecutive European qualifications, finishing sixth in 2020-21 and seventh in the following season.
Despite these achievements, West Ham's defensive struggles have been evident this season, as the team has conceded 70 goals in the Premier League, their joint-most in a single campaign. Only the bottom three clubs, Burnley, Luton, and Sheffield United, have worse defensive records.
After facing Luton on Saturday, West Ham will conclude their Premier League campaign with an away match against Manchester City on May 19th.
The potential arrival of Julen Lopetegui signals a change in direction for the club, with a focus on possession and more attacking football. Lopetegui, who left the Wolves job earlier this season, has expressed his desire to stay in the Premier League, making West Ham an appealing option for him.
As the transition takes place, West Ham fans are eagerly awaiting further developments and the promise of a bright future under a new manager.
