A Dartmouth College sorority and two fraternity members have been charged in connection with the drowning incident of a 20-year-old student earlier this summer. Won Jang, originally from Middletown, Delaware, was reported missing in July following an off-campus party. His body was later recovered from the Connecticut River by state and local emergency responders.
On Friday, Hanover police revealed that the Alpha Phi sorority has been charged with facilitating an underage alcohol house. Likewise, two members of the Beta Alpha Omega fraternity stand accused of supplying alcohol to someone under 21. The party, hosted by Alpha Phi, primarily included attendees who were underage, while Beta Alpha Omega provided the alcohol.
As the party drew to a close, several attendees ventured to the river for a swim. Heavy rainfall soon scattered most of the crowd, but Jang, who his family disclosed to authorities could not swim, was left alone and tragically drowned.
Following the incident, Dartmouth College suspended both the sorority and the fraternity, a decision that remains in effect. Jang was a member of Beta Alpha Omega.
In a statement, Dartmouth underscored its commitment to Greek life, emphasizing that such organizations enrich the student experience when they uphold their professed values and standards. The college stressed the collective responsibility of all students and community members to maintain a safe, respectful, equitable, and inclusive environment on campus.
