New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones had a challenging start to his preseason action as he returned to the field after a season-ending ACL injury in 2023. Making his debut against the Houston Texans on Saturday, Jones experienced a rough outing, with two of his first three drives ending in interceptions, including a pick six.

The first interception came as a result of a disastrous throw by Jones. With pressure in his own end zone, he held onto the ball for too long, attempting a pump fake instead of throwing it away. Regrettably, his pass into the flat ended up in the hands of Jalen Pitre, who easily converted it into a score. Jones narrowly avoided a safety on the play, but the turnover proved to be an even worse outcome.

Jones did manage to recover and connect on an intermediate completion to rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers, his first catch as a professional player, during the Giants' third drive. However, that drive also ended in a turnover when Jones attempted to thread a ball up the sideline to second-year wideout Jalin Hyatt, only for Derek Stingley Jr. to intercept the pass with excellent coverage.

Reflecting on his performance after the Giants' 28-10 loss, Jones admitted, "Obviously, the first quarter didn't go how we wanted it. A bad decision and a bad throw, I'd like to have that back." Despite the early struggles, Jones managed to bounce back in the game. He completed a big throw to Darius Slayton along the sideline, setting up a short touchdown run by Devin Singletary. Additionally, Jones connected with Nabers for 54 yards on four of six completions. The Giants scored a field goal on Jones' last drive, showcasing some improvement from the quarterback.

Overall, Jones finished the afternoon with 138 yards on 11 of 18 passing, with two turnovers. Despite the setbacks, the Giants managed to put up 10 points during his five drives. Jones acknowledged the need to finish drives with touchdowns but expressed satisfaction with the team's response in the second quarter.

It's clear that Jones has some kinks to work out as he shakes off the rust from his injury. However, his ability to rebound and make some stronger throws later in the game provides hope for his upcoming performances. The Giants will undoubtedly continue to evaluate and support Jones as he looks to regain his form for the upcoming season.
