However, the news of Jones' massive contract was met with a mix of bewilderment and skepticism, leaving many to question if he was truly worth such a significant investment.

Recently, Giants general manager Joe Schoen shed some light on the negotiations that led to Jones' lucrative deal. Speaking to Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post, Schoen revealed that Jones' agents, Brian Murphy and Camron Hahn, pitched the idea to the organization by highlighting the lack of a "middle class" for quarterbacks in the league. They argued that with the upcoming contracts for other talented quarterbacks, Jones deserved to be among the top earners.

As it turns out, Jones' agents weren't wrong in their assessment. The subsequent offseason saw several notable franchise quarterbacks secure substantial contracts. Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals, Jordan Love of the Green Bay Packers, and Trevor Lawrence of the Jacksonville Jaguars each received top-of-the-market deals, surpassing the $50 million per year mark.

Currently, Jones' average annual salary of $40 million places him 14th among quarterbacks in terms of earnings. However, this ranking is subject to change as Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys, who is expected to negotiate a new deal, will likely surpass Jones' salary and push him even further down the list.

Jones' recent performance in a preseason game against the Houston Texans showcased some struggles. In the Giants' 28-10 loss, Jones completed 11 of 18 passes for 138 yards but also threw two interceptions, with one being returned for a touchdown. It was a forgettable outing for the young quarterback, particularly as he aims to bounce back from a season-ending ACL injury suffered last year.

Despite this setback, Jones' breakout year came in 2022 when he threw for 3,205 yards and 15 touchdowns, while also contributing with 708 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns. It remains to be seen if he can replicate that level of performance and live up to the lofty expectations set by his sizable contract.

As time goes on, the worthiness of Daniel Jones' $160 million deal will continue to be scrutinized, especially against the backdrop of fellow quarterbacks securing lucrative contracts. For now, Jones has the opportunity to silence the doubters and justify the faith that the Giants and his agents have placed in him.
