Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has expressed a newfound openness to the possibility of taking his talents elsewhere after the 2024 season. In a recent statement, Prescott emphasized that he does not fear either situation – staying with the Cowboys or moving on to another team.
Prescott, who has one year remaining on his current contract, had initially shown optimism about continuing his career in Dallas. However, over the past month, doubts regarding a contract extension have begun to cast a shadow over his future with the team.
Owner Jerry Jones's comment that he doesn't fear this season potentially being Prescott's last in Dallas, coupled with reports suggesting that the Cowboys and the quarterback had an understanding not to adjust his contract before 2024, further fueled speculation.
While confirming that he has not had contract discussions with Jones at this point, Prescott revealed that they have had conversations and are currently "aligned" with the current situation. He did not rule out the possibility of future talks, but his focus remains on preparing for the upcoming season.
Prescott's performance last season was undeniably impressive, with the quarterback leading the Cowboys to the playoffs and achieving personal career highs in completions, completion percentage, and QB rating. His accomplishments earned him a second-place finish in the AP Most Valuable Player voting.
In terms of negotiations, Prescott made it clear that his priority is putting the team in the best situation rather than solely aiming to become the highest-paid player. This could bode well for the Cowboys, as they face limited cap space while needing to work on extensions for linebacker Micah Parsons and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.
Looking at the financial aspect, Prescott's 2024 cap hit stands at $55.445 million. Even if he were to enter free agency in the spring of 2025, he would still count $40.46 million against the team's cap. Currently ranking 10th in terms of average salary among quarterbacks, Prescott's $40 million per-year average places him behind other top earners in the league.
With no contract talks anticipated in the near future and both parties accepting the status quo, the possibility of 2024 marking Prescott's final season as a Cowboy appears increasingly likely as the offseason progresses.
As the 2021 season approaches, the focus for Prescott remains on improving as a player and leading the Dallas Cowboys. The future beyond 2024 remains uncertain, but for now, his commitment lies with the team that has been his home throughout his NFL career.
