Daisy Ridley Opens Up About Her Battle with Graves' Disease
In a recent interview with Women's Health, actress Daisy Ridley revealed that she has been diagnosed with Graves' disease. The diagnosis came in September 2023, and Ridley chose to share the news for the first time during the interview. Previously, she had been open about her struggles with endometriosis and polycystic ovaries.
Graves' disease is an immune system condition that affects the thyroid gland, according to Mayo Clinic. Reflecting on how she discovered her condition, Ridley recalled experiencing hot flashes and fatigue after finishing filming her latest movie, Magpie. Initially, she believed these symptoms were due to the stressful role she had just played. However, a meeting with an endocrinologist revealed that her symptoms, which included hand tremors, a racing heart rate, and weight loss, were actually a result of Graves' disease.
Describing her initial reaction to the diagnosis, Ridley shared, "It was funny, I was like, 'Oh, I just thought I was annoyed at the world,' but turns out everything is functioning so quickly, you can't chill out." She found it intriguing to discover the underlying cause of her feelings and symptoms.
Since her diagnosis, Ridley has made some adjustments to her lifestyle and diet to manage her condition. She mentioned that cutting down on gluten has made her feel better, although she does not strictly adhere to it. Instead, the actress has focused on regular exercise and self-care. She has carved out an hour every day for herself, during which she engages in activities that bring her joy and help her feel good.
Ridley highlighted the importance of being conscious of her well-being, stating, "I've always been health conscious, and now I'm trying to be more well-being conscious." By prioritizing her own self-care, she hopes to maintain a healthy balance in her life, despite the challenges posed by her condition.
Daisy Ridley's courage in opening up about her battle with Graves' disease serves as an inspiration for others facing similar health issues. Her candidness brings awareness to these conditions and encourages individuals to prioritize their well-being.
