Diane Hendricks, a native of Osseo, Wisconsin, has risen to the top of Forbes' list of America's Richest Self-Made Women for the seventh consecutive year. With an estimated net worth of $20.9 billion, nearly double her reported wealth from just two years ago, Hendricks has become a symbol of success and perseverance.
Hendricks, who grew up on a dairy farm, always envisioned a life beyond farming. At the age of 10, she looked out the window and decided that she wanted to wear suits, drive nice cars, and work in the city. Determined to make her dreams a reality, she pursued a career of her own.
However, the journey was not without its hurdles. At 17, Hendricks became a teenage mother and had to navigate the challenges of finishing high school while raising her child. Undeterred, she worked a series of odd jobs, including being a Playboy Bunny waitress, and slowly built a career in real estate.
In the 1970s, Hendricks met and married roof contractor Ken Hendricks. Together, they founded ABC Supply in Beloit, Wisconsin, in 1982. The company, which Hendricks currently chairs, has grown exponentially over the years. In 2021, ABC Supply recorded a revenue of $20.4 billion and boasts more than 900 branch locations, solidifying its position as a market leader in roofing supplies.
While Hendricks' success is remarkable, it has not come without controversy. In 2016, reports surfaced that she had not paid state income tax for several years. However, according to ABC Supply tax director Scott Bianchini, this was not illegal as the company had changed its tax classification during those years.
Despite her massive wealth and success, Hendricks remains deeply rooted in her community. She has invested millions of dollars in Beloit, transforming historic buildings, rescuing abandoned properties, and attracting new businesses to the area. In 2017, Hendricks also opened a career center aimed at providing skill workshops to middle and high school students, exposing them to various trades and career paths.
Hendricks' journey from a dairy farm in Wisconsin to the pinnacle of self-made wealth serves as an inspiration and testament to the power of determination and hard work. Her entrepreneurial spirit, coupled with her dedication to her community, has solidified her position as a trailblazer in the business world.
